The Audacious Cakery - Pastries in Everton Park

Everton Park has become a mecca for cafe hoppers in recent months, with a number of of old shophouses refurbished to become hipster cafes.

Situated amongst these newer establishments, is a bakery cafe that has been around for slightly longer. It is run by a former corporate executive turned baker.

The Audacious Cakery's name does suggest that Sharryl, the lady owner and head baker did indeed attempt something quite bold to leave the corporate world to dabble in F&B.

She was only an amateur baker before she decided to go into this full-time. And from the baked goods that she is producing at her current shop, it may come as a surprise that this is her first stint as a professional baker.

Baked Goods

Her repertoire consists mainly of handmade cupcakes, a range of mousse, different macarons and a selection of various tarts. She also does customized cakes but these are usually only made on special request.

Kuri - Chestnut and Coffee Mousse

The favorite for me was this delicate mousse with chestnut bits and infused with whiskey. Paired with salted caramel and a chocolate sponge, the coffee laced mousse brought together a range of diverse flavors that worked well together. Not overly sweet, a tinge of bitter notes and a slight savory crunch to counter the silky mousse texture.

Alexiss Mousse

Alexiss is another similar tasting mousse, but this time it has a banana center coupled with the chocolate sponge. The dark chocolate taste brought some gravitas to the more bright and fruity color of the banana and the entire dessert looked and tasted beautiful.

Lemon Meringue Tart

The classic lemon meringue tart was good too. I liked that the acidity of the curd and the sweetness of the meringue had a nice balance. Not too sharp and not too sweet, I only lamented that the meringue was too little, though I could see that they were going for a different look here.

Macarons

They also had a fairly decent range of macarons with a range of interesting flavors. Pictured above are the salted caramel, coconut and lemongrass, and the pea and wasabi macarons. Of the three, the pea and wasabi was the most striking as there was a familiar Japanese kick to the pillowy and crunchy feel of this classic dessert.

Matcha Cupcake

The cupcakes were less impressive when compared to the mousse, but they were still pretty decent as compared to more commercial fare like Twelve Cupcakes. The Matcha Cupcake was my favorite of the bunch as it had a gorgeous look about it. The Japanese influence was apparent again and though I wished the sponge had a better texture and flavor combination to it, it was still a fairly nice cupcake.

The Cafe Space

Within the bakery, there are also some seating area for those who wish to partake in their desserts on the spot. They serve some fairly decent coffee as well, and as such it makes for a good place to relax.

Overall, the mousse selection is the one that I will return for as the couple of mousse we sampled were of a very good quality. Intricate and made with some skill, the combination of flavors and ideas showed some creativity and effort. Whilst some of the cupcakes were a bit too overpowering for my palate, there is a younger crowd that patronizes Everton Park that may have a greater affinity for them.
